Sights and Sounds of Sailing A First-timer’s Primer

For those who are new to sailing and may be unfamiliar with some of the sights and sounds they’ll be encountering, here’s a mini-lesson on what will unfold.

The Catamaran

A common sight on BVI waters, the catamaran is the picture of beauty and grace when under sail and at anchorage. The cat (as she is called) is the perfect vessel for sailing charter holidays, since she is designed for both smoothness of ride and stability in the water.

The design provides an ultra-spacious interior with well-defined areas as well as a wraparound view that sits well above the water line so that the glorious BVI sea and island vistas are always within sight.

.As such, cats lend themselves well to families with children, seniors, newlyweds, groups of couples and best friends who simply want to enjoy the glassy smoothness of the island waters.

Setting Sail

Each day your catamaran will depart from its glorious anchorage according to your personal time schedule and the sails will be set free in the direction of your next island paradise. Expect to hear a fairly significant flapping sound as the sails unfurl to engage with the prevailing winds. You’re on your way!

Ask the Captain

Fortunately, steering your catamaran is more relaxing than driving a car, so your Captain is available and willing to talk about his favorite subject (sailing!) with passengers. Taking the helm, trying your hand at interpreting the navigational charts; these are welcome activities for both Captain and guests to share while on board.*

*If you think you may have been bitten by the sailing bug, Captain Hannah will provide Learn to Sail Certification for Basic Cruising, Bare Boating and Navigation. Ask him about times and dates while you’re aboard.

Safe Sailing

Safety comes first when you are traveling aboard Reflections Sailing Charters.

The following points outline standard safety procedures that are in effect during your cruise:

Adult passengers need not be swimmers in order to go sailing. They will, however, be made aware of the location of lifejackets aboard the catamaran for their own safety precautions.

Children are required to wear life jackets at all times while on board.

Captain Hannah has been thoroughly trained in CPR, First Aid, MedA3 and STCW Marine Safety should any emergency arise during the excursion.

Richard Hannah holds a Canadian Limited Masters Captains license and a British Virgin Islands Boatmaster license which ensures his competency for the commanding of power and sailing vessels and of being able to take full responsibility for his passengers, his vessel and himself.

The Reflections catamaran is equipped with a VHF radio, cell phone and email in the event that it is necessary to contact air ambulance or British Virgin Islands emergency authority.
